Mouse Tales

(Click on Mouse Tales to learn more about this collaborative internet project.)

This wonderful project enabled us to read a wide variety of mouse stories and write and share summaries of some of these "mouse tales." One of our favorites was Woodrow, the White House Mouse by Peter Barnes and Cheryl Barnes.  Students used Kidspiration software to summarize main points in the story and information learned about our Presidents and the White House.  Below are some highlights from the book and information that we learned.

We also wrote our own mouse stories using the Olympics and the Lewis and Clark Expedition for our ideas.  We used characters and locations that fit with these topics.  We hope that the readers of our stories will learn more about the Olympics and Lewis and Clark Expedition and enjoy our creative ideas.  It was only one week into the Olympics when our stories were written so most of the characters reflect U.S. winners during that first week.

Woodrow, The White House Mouse

Every four years, like the rest of us do,

The mice of the nation elect someone, too.

Living in Washington's grandest old house,

A leader respected--a President mouse!

Woodrow G. Washingtail won the last vote.

"A mouse Yankee Doodle!" the newspapers wrote.

So good and so brave, and smart, if you please-

His favorite food?  Why, American cheese!

(Named after President George Washington and

President Woodrow Wilson

Bull Mouse Party - Bull Moose Party)

The White House was lit, floor to roof, wall to wall,

for the beautiful, splendid Inaugural Ball.

Soon, Woodrow arrived, with his First Lady, Bess,

And their children in tow-about eight, more or less.

There were Truman and Franklin, their two oldest sons,

And Quentin and Kermit, the mischievous ones.

And Dolley and Millie, and the twins, George and Art

(Not even their classmates could tell them apart).

(Children named after President Harry Truman, President Teddy Roosevelt's sons, Quentin and Kermit, President Franklin Roosevelt, First Lady Dolley Madison, Springer Spaniel, Millie owned by President George Bush, President George Washington, First Lady Bess Truman, and President Chester Arthur.  Dress shown is a copy of "Mamie Pink" worn by Mamie Eisenhower with 4,000 rhinestones.)

The President has a big job, you'll agree--

Many places to go, many people to see.

In the great Oval Office, he does all his thinkin'-

And Woodrow, they say, is as smart as Abe Lincoln!

The primary job of the President mouse

Is working with Congress-

the Senate and House.

He's the "Chief Executive," which means he's in charge

Of government departments, the small and the large.

He is also "Commander in Chief," and that means

The Army and Navy, Air Force and Marines

Report to the President as boss, the "Big Cheese"-

On this, every soldier and sailor agrees.

But the President also gets time out to play-Every Easter, for instance, is egg rolling day!

There are orange eggs, yellow eggs--purple eggs, too!

There are even some eggs colored red, white, and blue!

(Egg Roll is held on the White House lawn on the Monday after Easter.  East Room is the largest room and is used for entertaining, concerts, dances, press conferences and more.  The Red Room serves as a parlor , as does the Green Room.  The Blue Room is the main reception room.  The Oval Office is where the President conducts official business.  Many of the pictures in the book show actual furnishings and decorations such as the Presidents's desk called "Resolute Desk."  It was made from oak timbers of the British ship Resolute.  The desk was given as a gift to President Hayes by Queen Victoria in 1880.)

Inside the White House,

there's also more fun

For Woodrow, his family

and most everyone!

The East Room is used for artistic events

Like concerts and shows for mouse ladies and gents!

The Red Room and Green Room are not side by side,

But they're wonderful places for children to hide.

The Blue Room at Christmas is decked to the ceiling

The fire is roaring-the children, all squealing.

And as he nodded to sleep, the good President mouse

Was thankful for family

and country (and House!).

The Olympic Mice

One day a mouse family decided to go to the Olympics.  They went to the airport and flew to Torimouse, Mitaly (Turino, Italy).  They saw Med Micety (Ted Ligety) doing skiing, Shauntail Whitemouse (Shaun White) doing snowboarding.  They called him the "flying cheese".  They also saw Hannah Miceter (Hannah Teter) doing snowboarding.  It was getting late so the mouse family decided to go to their hotel room.

The next day they went back to see the rest of the Olympics.  They saw Emily Hughes doing figure skating, Chad Medrick (Chad Hedrick) doing speed skating, Metchen Meiler (Gretchen Bleiler) doing snowboarding.  They also saw Moey Squeak (Joey Cheek) doing speed skating.  It was late and they were getting hungry.

So they went to the nearest place to eat and they had cheese.  They also saw the rest of the Olympics.  The next day they saw Med Miecty, Shauntail Whitemouse, Chad Medrick, Hannah Miceter, and Moey Squeak get gold medals.  They saw Metcher Meiler get a silver medal.  The next morning the family was sad.  They had to leave Torimouse, Mitaly.  When they got home they thought of how much fun they had.  Squeak!

The Expedition

Once upon a time there was a mouse named Tommy Jeffy Mouse (Thomas Jefferson).  He lived in the mouse of Chello (Monticello).  Tommy Jeffy Mouse was the President.  So he ordered Mousey Wether Lewis (Merriwether Lewis) and Mousey Will Clark (William Clark) to go to the Mousecific Ocean (Pacific Ocean).  He also wanted them to make maps, collect plants, make friends with the tribes, and bring back some animals for the museum.  He wanted them to bring an animal for him too.

They started in St. Louis, Missouri.  One day they met a mouse named Squeakagawea (Sacagawea) who helped them with their journey.  When they got to North Dakota they rested.  Finally they got to Oregon and reached the Mousecific Ocean.
