Mercer, WI has a population of approx. 1,800 is located in Iron County. In 1894 the first train arrived in Mercer signaling the beginning of the early settlers. Lumbering flourished and in later years with the decline of lumbering, Mercer became a popular vacation area for fishing and hunting. Smokey Bear was first created by Mercer's Forest Rangers in 1950 to teach fire safety. Recreational activities feature winter sports such as snowmobiling, cross country skiing, ice fishing, snowshoeing and many other winter sports. In 1981 Mercer became The Loon Capitol and her name is "Clair d'Loon". She is 16 feet tall and weiighs 2,000 pounds. Now that is one big Loon. Some fun facts about Iron County -- we have no stop lights in the county, 15 waterfalls and 7 miles of shoreline on Lake Superior. Iron County also has 214 names and many more unnamed lakes. We are also known for the greatest population of black bears of any county. |
