After reading about Martin Luther King we created a dream quilt. Each child thought of a dream and then illustrated it, using both crayon and water color. We then framed it by using small quilt squares, creating a patterned border.

This also tied in well with our math unit. We have been studying arrays, and the students worked together to figure out what array our quilt would be. If we had 20 students in our class what would be the array of our quilt? A 5 x 4 array, or 4 x 5 array. We also looked at other quilts as arrays, in order to figure out how many quilt squares were used.

POETRY

The class then wrote poetry in a choice of 4 formats, acrostic, 5 W’s, cinquan’s and free verse, all related to quilts. Can you find one of each kind?
An old lady
Made a puffy quilt
On March 1, 2000
Near the big window
Because she wanted to give
it to her kid.

Shining Quilts
The shining quilts shine as
bright as the sun.
Children's Delight looks like
gold spiders crawling around dice
King's Crown looks like a
shiny gold crown
with silver X's on the outside
Bears Paw seems like
gold people walking and
purple grapes on a vine
Tree of Paradise looks like a
green tree with gold leaves
Tea Leaf looks like a
jail of vines with sparkling diamonds.
Robbing Peter to Pay Paul looks like
prickles on white squares.
The Spool looks like
four golden spiders crawling
in their purple cave.
The Fish seem like a
sparly sun with a hexagon around it.
Corn and Beans looks like gold corn with
green triangles for the beans.
There are many more shining quilts
in the world.

We wrote a class poem using similes. We compared the different parts of the quilt to our class.
