Ideas I Have Used

Class Quilt
During my first year as a kindergarten teacher, we naturally thought of quilt for letter "Q" and made class quilts with crayon pictures on muslin. These were sewn together with simple calico strips and no batting. I continued the project as a first grade teacher, and fifth graders enjoyed coming back to my room to see their marvelous first grade artwork. As a second grade teacher, we have tried more involved quilt projects. Students have been able to sew some of the sections together by hand, and then hand tie the quilts. http://www.thecraftstudio.com/qwc/ has some great ideas and information about quilting with children.

Students Share Their Quilts

Another favorite project has been asking the children to bring in a quilt from home if they have one, and then each child shares about his quilt. This provides some great opportunities for creative writing. Children get to lie on their quilts for story time, and Mrs. Dennison has some of her own quilts for those without a quilt to use.
