Grandma's Gift
Brenda Howespian

My grandma made a quilt for me
And on it sewed our family tree,
All stitched by hand with loving care
Around each piece and every square.

Quilts, what treasures when they're old
If their stories could be told.
Some have crossed the prairies wide;
Seen this country side to side.

Women, well into the night
Around a frame by candlelight,
Would gather for the company
And quilt for each new family.

So from their lives the quilts were styled
Of satin, velvet, lace and lisle.
A dress becomes a Double Ring,
Rosettes from scraps of anything.

My quilt is framed in Ocean Wave;
Its cloth from memories Grandma saved,
Saved them each especially
Just to make this quilt for me.
